Who Owns KAOS Yacht?

KAOS is owned by Nancy Walton Laurie, an American billionaire and Walmart heiress. She bought the 110-meter (361-foot) Oceanco superyacht for an estimated $300 million in 2018 and renamed it KAOS after a major refit. Today it is one of the most recognizable and most photographed private yachts on the water.

Who Owns KAOS Yacht

Laurie’s name does not actually appear on the paperwork. The yacht is held through a legal entity called Secret III Ltd, a common ownership structure for yachts of this size that keeps the owner’s name off public registries. Her ownership was confirmed by industry reporting rather than any official statement, which is exactly why the question “who owns KAOS?” keeps getting asked in the first place.

Nancy Walton Laurie is an American billionaire and philanthropist, born on 15 May 1951. Her father, James Bud Walton, co-founded Walmart with his brother, Sam Walton. When Bud died in 1995, Nancy inherited a large Walmart stake, which she shares with her sister, Ann Walton Kroenke. As of 2026, Forbes estimates her net worth at around $17.1 billion, placing her near #163 on its real-time billionaires list.

She and her husband, Bill Laurie, who she met at University of Memphis, are longtime sports and arts patrons who have owned the NHL’s St. Louis Blues and founded the Cedar Lake contemporary ballet company. In short, she is exactly the kind of low-profile, old-money billionaire who buys a $300 million yacht and then keeps her name off it.

How Much Did KAOS Cost, and What Does it Cost to Run?

Laurie reportedly paid around $300 million for the yacht. When the Qatari royal family first listed it, the asking price was about $310 million. The part buyers rarely think about is the running cost. As a rule of thumb in the industry, a superyacht costs around 10% of its value per year to operate. This includes crew salaries, fuel, dockage, insurance, and maintenance. For KAOS, that works out to somewhere around $30 million a year, before any major refit. That single figure explains why fewer than a few hundred people on earth can realistically own a yacht like this.

The Design: A Yacht Built to Fool the Eye

KAOS Yacht Design and Features
KAOS Yacht Design and Features

KAOS ‘ exterior, by Igor Lobanov, is famous for one clever trick. At 110 meters with unusually tall decks, the yacht could have looked top-heavy. Instead, Lobanov used “fake decks” with smoked-glass panels and sections of teak that mimic usable deck space to visually stretch and lower the profile. Nearly two kilometers of hidden LED lighting reinforce the illusion at night.

Oceanco’s own designers describe it as making the yacht appear long and lean through a deliberate trompe-I’ceil effect. Stand next to KAOS and you are looking at a superstructure engineered as much for the eye as for the sea. Lobanov said the yacht was meant to resemble an island ringed by blue water, which is why the reflective metallic hull matters as much as the shape.

Interior and the 2020 Refit

Sam Sorgiovanni, an Australian designer, created the original design. He combined Arabian and European influences with more marble than any Oceanco yacht built before it. After Laurie bought the yacht, it went through a year-long refit at Lurssen in Hamburg, where the interior was completely reimagined by Reymond Langton Design. The work renewed around 1,500 square meters of interior space and introduced a more contemporary feel while keeping the original grandeur. The yacht emerged from that refit in 2020 with its new name: KAOS.

Was KAOS Really the Largest Yacht Built in the Netherlands?

KAOS measures 110.1 meters. Most people think the Infinity yacht is the largest, which measures 117 meters. Infinity achieved groundbreaking national status upon her completion at the time of her delivery in May 2022. She was the largest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands and the largest yacht in Oceanco’s fleet.

However, yacht size is officially judged by volume (Gross Tonnage) rather than length alone. Even by that metric, KAOS is the larger ship at 4,523 Gross Tonnage (GT) compared to Infinity’s 4,978 Gross Tonnage (GT). So, neither KAOS nor Infinity holds the record today. The current record holder is the 127-meter KORU. She was also built by Oceanco in the Netherlands, and she took the crown upon her delivery in 2023. KORU yacht was custom-built for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

The 2023 Ibiza Paint Protest

In July 2023, activists from the Spanish climate group Futuro Vegetal sprayed red and black paint on KAOS from fire extinguishers while it was docked in Ibiza, holding a banner reading “You consume, others suffer.” The incident, reported by CNN, CBS News and others, was aimed at the environmental impact of superyachts.

The paint was largely biodegradable and crew hosed it off, but the images went global, and are a big reason KAOS became a household name beyond the yachting world. After years of covering superyachts, I would argue KAOS is interesting less for its size than for what it represents: a quietly-owned trophy asset whose fame came from a paint can, not a boat show.

The engineering is genuinely clever, but the reason you are reading about it is the collision of extreme wealth, anonymity, and a viral protest. That’s the real story behind this KAOS yacht.
